Commonly Used Madurese Vocabulary
You may already be familiar with Indonesia, an archipelagic country located in Southeast Asia, which is well known for its rich divesity of cultural wonders, culinaries, traditions, and unique languages across its regions. Each of them has distinctive local characteristics that leave an extraordinary impression on anyone who encounters them. Among the local wisdoms0 worthy of attention is the Madurese language.
Madura itself is one of the regions that is still considered part of northeastern East Java (despite being on a different island), the island also has two local terms, namely Medhunten and Medhure. Moreover, the most prominent nickname commonly attributed to this region is 'The Salt Island', reflecting its vital potential as one of Indonesia's largest and highest-quality salt producers. Returning to the main discussion, the Madurese language has spread to several regions around East Java (Jember, Situbondo and Pandhalungan area) and has long been closely related to the Javanese language. Some literary sources even suggest (although still largely speculative) that the Madurese language is the original root of the Javanese language, regardless of whether this claim is true or not.
Furthermore, since the author himself is a native of Jember, where the Madurese language is quite frequently used by many people, it is therefore appropriate to present in this writing a number of Madurese vocabularies that are commonly heard from native speakers of Madurese, to the best of the author's knowledge, as well as to serve as a source of knowledge for those who wish to learn more about Madura.
